Green Well Salad

This salad is a MUST MAKE!  Last year I read Shana Niequist's book Bread and Wine and I posted a tiny little review here.  I have made this salad several times for friends and it is ALWAYS a hit.  Please invite some friends over and make this!  They will think you are a cook whether you are or are not!

(via: incourage.me)

Salad:
1 pound mixed greens 2 onions, thinly sliced 1 T butter 2 sliced pears 2 cups of red grapes, halved 1 cup dried cherries 1 cup walnuts, chopped 1 4 oz container crumbled goat cheese
Maple vinaigrette:
1T maple syrup 1T Dijion 1/4 c balsamic vinegar 1/2 cup olive oil Salt and Pepper to taste
Begin by caramelizing the onions. Slice them thinly and cook them on medium-low heat in a tablespoon of butter until rich, dark brown, about 45 min.
For the vinaigrette: add all of the ingredients to a mason jar and shake it up! Taste and adjust for seasoning.
For the salad: Toss the greens with half the vinaigrette, then add the rest of the ingredients, the rest of the dressing, and toss again.
If you like a more substantial main-course salad, add 2 cups or so of sliced cooked chicken. All I did to season my chicken was sprinkle these things on the chicken: sea salt, white pepper, black pepper, oregano, parsley and then bake.

Mended by Angie Smith

When I put this book on my reading list, I did not know anything other than it was written by Angie Smith.  So in my mind, it had to be a good read chalked full of wisdom.  The book is several years old now and I am sure has been read by many before me.  Here is my small take on this book.

There are 31 "chapters" to this book.  They are excerpts from Angie's blog.  She comprised a book with her deepest blogged thoughts in a difficult season of life: loosing her 4th daughter at just hours old.  You will be blessed by the first chapter The Past and the Pitcher.  I hope you will be challenged to go purchase a pitcher and smash it or pull one off your shelf and allow the Master to walk you through the process of restoration.

Mended would be a great summer devotional for any individual: single, married, with or without children..... The "chapters" are perfect in length and full of meat that will have you chewing all day.  You will be blessed by the scripture that Angie has laced through each chapter.

You can pick this book up in hard copy or you can purchase like I did for Kindle here.

Anything by Jennie Allen

Last Fall I worked through Jennie Allen's STUCK study.  It was my introduction to Jennie Allen and I was so impressed.  Mostly impressed with "in your face honesty" from a woman who grew up in the church and finds herself a pastor's wife and a mom to four kiddos.

Anything was part of my Winter Reading List.  I read it because of my friend Laura's recommendation.  Anything is Jennie's personal prayer to the Lord.  Anything should be our prayer to if we want Jesus to become greater in our lives and everything else smaller.

This book continues the wreckage that God is doing in my life right now.  It continues His upheaval of me and magnification of Himself.  I've known Jesus for 26 years.  It almost seems impossible.  Sometimes I wonder....what have I done in those 26 years?  What I love about Jesus....He continues to press deep into me and I never "master" Him.

Here are a few of my favorite highlights from the book
 {and when looking back, I almost highlighted the ENTIRE book}

"Every sin, at its root, is based in something we do not fully believe about God"

"What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us" ~Tozer

"To risk is to willingly place your life in the hand of an unseen God and an unknown future, then to watch him come through.  He starts to get real when you live like that"

"What if the thing we are trying to impress him with was the very thing keeping us from him?"

"God is home to us.  He is where we were made to be.  He is what we were made for.  We just forget all that while we are trying to be good and independent"

"Pretending to be good halts God's movement in our life"

"Love is jealous...especially God's love.  He wants me, and I want everybody else"

"We keep spinning.  We keep searching, restless.  We keep missing all he has for us.  He'll always feel far away, drowned out by other louder rivers, until every other thing fades away and He becomes the only thing"

"If we can taste heaven, we live differently"

"If we exalt God to his right place in our lives, a thousand minor problems will be solved at once" ~Tozer

On Mary (The Mother of Jesus)
"With no regard for the way this would impact her short life here, she looked for the big picture.  She saw that this was going to save generations of humans.  She felt the eternal significance of her life and praised God that she got to be part of his plan, part of his plan to redeem people.  No matter the suffering she would have in this life, she was praising God for a chance to participate in eternity."

"God did not seem too worried about what the people in Scripture thought about their callings; he handed them out even if they felt reluctant or unsure about their assignments.  Moses and Jonah and Esther all wished their callings away.  But, in their obedience, God was changing the world and building his stories."

"Eternity was changed by a few disciples?  The entire church age started by fishermen?"

"God's priorities are beautiful, and they trickle down into invisible spaces....into neighborhoods and families and friends and strangers.  He will call us to pour our lives into the cracks around us, and sometimes into cracks far from our doorsteps.  But wherever he calls us, we pour, not wishing for a larger crack or a more noticeable one, or even the one we were expecting" ~Oswald Chambers

"We don't follow God just because he is God, just because he is boss.  We follow God because he builds beautiful stories, even if they are not easy"

"So do your everyday and your ordinary.  Godliness is found and formed in those places.  No man or woman greatly used by God has escaped them.  Great men and women of God have transformed the mundane, turning neighborhoods into mission fields, parenting into launching the next generation of God's voices, legal work into loving those most hurting, waiting tables into serving and loving in such a way that people see our God"

Winter Reading List

I have about 20 books that I would like to read in 2014.
Here are my first five.
I couldn't be more excited!

And I look forward to sharing little mini reviews of each of these books.

This was recommended by one of my former small group girls.
She loved it.  It sounds like a great read.

I have heard a lot about this girl and even heard her on a radio interview.
She is intriguing and down right astounding.
My friend Ashley read a paragraph from this book one night in our small group
and I knew it had to be on my reading list.

I will be flowing along with Bloom Book Club as I journey through this read.
If you have never read a book with Bloom...you should!
I have loved everyone I have read along with them.

Recently finished up Jennie's study STUCK.
My friend Laura highly recommended this book.
And since she recommended STUCK and it was excellent....
I definitely wanted to read this book.

And this little book with a cute cover came up in my
Amazon suggestions for reads a few weeks ago.
It has over 2000 reviews.  It looks cute and yet interesting.
 I think it will be a lighthearted read.
And hopefully I will enjoy it...
I'll let you know.

Sparkly Green Earrings: Fall Reading List Review

This is probably one of the funniest books on motherhood I have ever read.  We read a lot on parenting but sometimes a mom just needs to read something lighthearted.  This book will have you laughing so hard you are crying and thankful that someone put into words what you have felt so many times as a mom.

From sleepless nights, to potty training, to Brownie meetings and soccer practices Melanie Shankle will capture you with her quick wit and just down right hilarious way of looking at a situation.  She makes me wish I could think faster or just be half as funny as she is.

Here is an excerpt from the end of her book that resonated so deeply with me.....

"I have never been a mother who mourned all the passing signs of babyhood.  Sure, I'd love to have one more day with Caroline as a newborn or a toddler, but for me, motherhood has just gotten better as I've survived breastfeeding, weaned her off the pacifier, completed our potty-training marathon, and watched the terrible threes turn into the charming fours.

But something about watching her walk into school by herself made me think of all the ways I'll have to let her go over a lifetime.  The truth is, I don't want to let her go, yet I am so proud every time I see she is self-confident enough to take these next steps away from me."

"Because raising a child is a fleeting moment in time that sometimes get swallowed up in the daily routine of car pools and soccer practice and can I get away with serving tacos for dinner again tonight?          And yet it's quite possibly the most important thing we'll ever do.  It's the daily balance of treasuring the moments even as we wish some of them away.  It's treading water in a sea of imperfections.  It's a delicate dance of guilt and joy."

I sighed a deep breath of relief when I read the words above....finally someone who said what I have always thought inside.  And relief of knowing just because I don't weep when my babies stop nursing or move out of their crib into a big bed that I am not any less of a mom.  But oh when they get out of the car to walk into to kindergarten......I just might DIE!

I hope you take time to read this book.  You will be blessed!

And Melanie's latest book The Antelope in the Living Room will release February 4, 2014.

{2 Books that are Currently Rocking My World}

Two books that are currently rocking my world

//1//

We have always tucked our kids at night together with a Bible story and prayer.  Our kids are now old enough that they hold us to this sacred time.  They never let us get away with.....it's too late....we are so tired....

For years we have read to them out of another children's Bible.
Last week we decided that they might be old enough to hold an attention span for the stories out of The Jesus Storybook Bible.  They have done pretty well (our 3 year old better than our 2 year old...but we are working on that one)

I honestly love reading out of this Bible to our children.  Every story whispers the name of Jesus.  I  love how each story clearly echoes God's love for mankind and His eternal desire to restore mankind.  Truly, I feel God speaking deeply and personally through this children's Bible.

"But all the stars and the mountains and oceans and galaxies and everything were nothing compared to how much God loved his children.  He would move heaven and earth to be near them.  Always.  Whatever happened, whatever it cost him, he would always love them.  And so it was that the wonderful love story began..." ~The Storybook Bible

My small group has been working through this Jennie Allen study, STUCK.
And the word that comes to mind is OUCH!
 Ouch because I get stuck in everyone of these places

::Broken::
::Mad::
::Discontent::
::Scared::
::Overwhelmed::
::Sad::

Honestly, I am getting a beating through this study.  My eyes are being opened to how selfish I am and how my selfishness creates these quicksands where I get stuck.  It's not pretty.  And sometimes these stuck places come out just down right ugly {yes pastor's wives are real people who have not so pretty moments that are U.G.L.Y}

If you are a woman, you want to get your hands on this study.  It will be most beneficial if you work through it with other women so that you do not fall into the lie of believing that no other women you are around suffer from these stuck places.

Real live wrestle occurs personally through this study.
You will become undone and hopefully reshaped.
Just plain L.O.V.E. this study!
{Thanks to my sweet friend Laura for the recommendation}

Summer Reading List

The next several months of my life will be busy.  But I do have a "Summer Reading" List.  When I had my first baby, I made it through many feedings by my iPhone alone.  I know that may not be the "bonding" thing to do and some may say that I am missing out by being on my phone, but honestly.....for me....it was my saving grace.

When I had my second child, my sister had just had a baby as well.  There were a lot of feedings spent communicating with her back and forth through text during feedings.  It was a sweet time for me to help encourage my sister in her new found mommy hood.

The nursing of both of my children lead to a lot of blog reading on my iPhone and various different websites.  It honestly was such a good connecting place for me.  And while this time around I want to utilize my iPhone for brainless searching of the internet, I also want pour valuable things my heart as well.

I am huge fan of the Kindle for iPhone app.  I have read many books on my iPhone Kindle App when our iPad was not available to me.  I just downloaded

I have only heard really great reviews about this book and it comes highly recommended by several of my closest friends.  There is also a Bloom Book Club series of videos to go along with it.  Just click on the link and scroll down to Seven: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess and there are videos that walk you through chapter by chapter.

I am sure if I get through this one book I will be doing well.  Here are a few more books I hope to read at least before the end of the year.
